Anyone who has mixed sound in a black box theatre knows that sometimes the room itself is your biggest challenge.
I recently worked a show in a black box with particularly difficult acoustics. Hard reflective surfaces, a compact performance area, open microphones, and speakers that inevitably had to live closer to the action than I would have liked created a perfect recipe for feedback and a muddy, reverberant mix.
It was a great opportunity to put Alpha Labs' De-Feedback AI to work in an actual production environment.
More Than Just Ringing Out the Room
Traditionally, dealing with feedback means carefully positioning microphones and speakers, ringing out the system, finding problem frequencies, and using narrow EQ cuts to buy additional gain before feedback. Those techniques are still important... and good system design will always come first. But there is a point where physics starts winning.
That's where De-Feedback became particularly interesting.
Rather than simply functioning like another automated feedback suppressor that identifies frequencies and inserts EQ filters, De-Feedback uses AI-based processing designed to distinguish unwanted feedback and room sound from the desired microphone signal. For this particular show, the difference was immediately useful.
The Black Box Test
The room was about as unforgiving as you could ask for. Reflections were everywhere, and getting the vocal level I wanted while maintaining clarity was a constant balancing act. With De-Feedback inserted into the signal chain, I was able to push the system farther than I normally would have been comfortable doing in that room. More importantly, the improvement wasn't simply about making the system louder. Reducing some of the room's reverberant character helped the vocals feel closer, clearer, and more intelligible instead of sounding like they were swimming around the space.
For theatre, that's a big deal.
An audience doesn't care how impressive your PA system is if they can't understand the dialogue.
It's Not a Replacement for Good Audio Engineering.
I wouldn't look at De-Feedback as a substitute for proper microphone placement, speaker placement, gain structure, EQ, or system tuning.
Those fundamentals still matter.
Instead, I see it as another tool in the toolbox. Particularly for productions where you don't have complete control over the environment.
Black boxes, churches, school auditoriums, corporate ballrooms, reflective event spaces, and other unconventional venues don't always give an audio engineer ideal conditions. Sometimes the speakers have to go where they fit. Sometimes microphones have to be placed where the production requires them. And sometimes the acoustics are simply terrible. Technology that gives us a little more room to work within those limitations can be incredibly valuable.
Would I Use It Again?
Absolutely.
After using De-Feedback AI in a genuinely difficult room rather than just experimenting with it under controlled conditions, I came away impressed. It's not magic, and I'm not throwing away my EQ anytime soon. But on the right production (especially one where open microphones, difficult acoustics, and limited gain before feedback are working against you) it can solve a very real problem.
And that's ultimately what good production technology should do.
